Do you Have a Plan B?
We know that analytical instrumentation that was once of interest only to specialists are now utilized by a larger number of scientists in universities, research institutes, along with biotech, pharma, and material testing labs, to name just a few. Consider advanced research instrumentation like NMR.
Strategically source in light of possible deep cuts to federal funding
The cost of capital required for purchase of a commercially available instrument (like NMR) is only part of the investment (sometimes grants cover the entire cost and sometimes they don’t. Likewise, sometimes one gets the grant funding and sometimes not. When they don’t, sometimes they look into Overbrook Support.)
Many are bracing for deep cuts in the federal funding that has fueled research for decades, raising fears that breakthrough work will suffer setbacks. Materials testing, pharmaceutical drug discovery, cancer cures, polymers, or manufacturing of API are all at risk. As a consequence many are looking for alternate means of securing the instrumentation they need to continue the science they do.
According to Advanced Research Instrumentation and Facilities (National Academies Press) besides the cost of the instrument itself, there’s the costs associated with continual upkeep of the instrument which may include siting costs, energy costs, service contracts, and repair costs too.
Sometimes when it comes to sophisticated and sensitive instrumentation like NMR, there may be costs associated with renovation, or readying the site for the instrument, and purchase of peripheral equipment, such as clean rooms and shielding.
While some of our clients rely on High end Shared Instrumentation grants (S10), NSF, NIH, SBIR and other federally-funded sources, that alone is not sufficient to actually operate, maintain, maintain compliance, and assist researchers (and/or students).
To achieve the intended high-level performance, a service, repair and maintenance contract is necessary.
NMR are Offered by Overbrook Support
Speaking of operations and maintenance, siting and support, when it comes to NMR, Overbrook has you covered. We now offer numerous NMR instrumentation – Bruker, Varian, 400, 500, 600 MHz. We may just have what you need in stock (and if not, can usually strategically source one for you.)
